III- After this initial time, verify your computer´s suggestions and compare them with your own conclusions. II- Turn on the analysis engine, minimize the ChessBase screen (so you can't see what it suggests), and analyze the position for some time (15 minutes is a good start). I-Setup the position on the board and on your computer Method 1 (the same I proposed in my previous article): I will propose two methods of working with the computer, which I think will be very useful for your training: Obviously, like with everything in life, people diverge on how to use this tool. With this aim, chess softwares can be very useful if used correctly. To improve, you have to understand and question these analyses, and have your own ideas. They spend many hours looking at the screen, memorizing openings, or passively reproducing books and engines' suggestions. Unfortunately, many chess students do not see it this way. When asked about what directions chess would take with the growth of technology, the great Mikhail Botvinnik said computers would be a good tool, but independent analysis would always be necessary. Independent analysis, even though it's more time-consuming, is what makes the difference. When I ask them why they do it, usually the answer is that they save time since the screen suggestion will be better than what they think, anyway.īut this idea of “saving time” is not the correct approach for those who seek to achieve grandmaster class. The result of this is a total lack of creativity in his analysis and a worsening of his practical skills of calculation and decision-taking. They have no patience to think about the position anymore. Since I am a GM both on correspondence (where nowadays everyone analyzes with the engines) and over the board chess, I know both sides of the coin: the scientific and the practical.Īn incorrect work in this field can be very harmful to the tournament player, leading him to stop thinking for himself and only believe the computer's suggestions. I hope that after reading my advice, you will have a much better idea of what you must do and will avoid the common mistakes made by those who thoughtlessly use chess engines. Many chess players have no clue on how to use the machine to their benefit. I think I'll go watch some videos on game analysis so I can learn how to use these tools better. In this article, I will expand on some ideas that were presented when I wrote about preparing your opening repertoire. I was really excited about saving $90/year but right now I don't think that 's Game Review can be beat. In my opinion, both tools compliment each other, but 's Game Review represents a good value, easily giving you the ability to try and correct your mistakes as well as telling you in plain language why you move was bad (you missed the fork) and why the correct move is good (you found the fork) (ChessX has already told me this, and I yes, I can turn those arrows off but if I do it isn't clear how I know when to turn them back on.)Ĭlicking Best shows me the proper Queen forkĬhessX shows my actual move and what I should have played. It let me learn by retrying, and gives me the answers with the "Best" button. Right away it tells me that I missed an opportunity to fork pieces. Now lets make the next move, my h8 blunder. Game Review did not reveal this a this screen. My best move results in a fork with the King and Pawn. I think the white arrow is the threat arrow. Game Review is much better.ĬhessX show their move with the purple arrow and what my best move should be with the orange arrow but it does not tell me why the queen move is the best move. We can see the various Mating lines above, but to a beginner like me, this is mostly useless. I'm sure that's because I can't use it effectively. The analysis tab, frankly, isn't much help to me. Game Review tells me that my opponent has allowed a forced checkmate. This is right after I promote to Queen and my opponent makes the blunder f4 Diamond gives you infinite analysis, that's why I'm Diamond.īut can ChessX replace that? Let's look at two moves in the game, comparing 's Game Review, Analysis, and ChessX's analysis. I've made a post about this game and if you want to discuss the game, please do it there.Ī common theme here in is that one can't afford the $90 diamond membership. Note, I'm not looking for comments on the game itself.
